Back Belts and Injury Prevention

Should Employees Wear Back Belts for Lifting?

Back belts are not recommended as a method for preventing workplace injuries.

While they may help keep low back muscles warm and encourage proper posture during lifting, they do not reduce the forces responsible for low back injuries. In some cases, they can create a false sense of security and should not be considered a form of personal protective equipment.

After reviewing available scientific literature, NIOSH has concluded that there is insufficient evidence to support or refute the effectiveness of back belts in preventing injuries. As a result, the use of back belts is not recommended for workers who have not previously been injured.
