Lifting Limits and Regulations

Is There a Limit to How Much Weight Employees Can Lift?

There is currently no workplace standard or regulation that restricts or limits the maximum amount of weight an individual employee can lift.

In 1991, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a lifting equation to assist employers in reducing the risk of lift-related musculoskeletal injuries. This equation is commonly used as a guideline to evaluate lifting tasks and identify potential risks.

Employers are encouraged to assess lifting requirements carefully and implement ergonomic controls where needed to reduce strain and injury.
