OSHA and Ergonomics Standards

Does OSHA Have an Ergonomics Standard?

OSHA does not currently have a 1910 General Industry standard for ergonomics.

Ergonomic-related issues in most industries are generally addressed under the General Duty Clause, which requires employers to provide a workplace free from recognized hazards.

As part of its outreach efforts, OSHA has developed industry-specific ergonomic guidelines to help reduce and prevent workplace injuries. These guidelines are a key component of OSHA’s broader approach to ergonomics.

Currently, OSHA provides ergonomic guidance for several industries, including poultry processing, shipyard operations, retail grocery, nursing homes, and the meatpacking industry.

Employers are encouraged to review applicable OSHA guidance and incorporate recommended practices into their workplace safety programs.
