Vibration Exposure in the Workplace

Should Employers Be Concerned About Vibration Exposure?

Yes - Vibration exposure is a recognized ergonomic risk factor.

Vibration has been associated with an increased risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), as well as conditions such as Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS).

Common sources of vibration include machinery and tools, as well as long periods of driving where vibration is transmitted through the seat, back, or hands.

Studies have shown that certain occupations are at higher risk for vibration-related injuries. These include forestry workers, stone drillers, stone cutters or carvers, shipyard workers, and long-haul truck drivers.

Employers should consider vibration exposure when evaluating workplace hazards and take appropriate steps to reduce risk where possible.
